What is ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fiber?

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is one of the fibers with the highest strength and modulus in the world is called the world's three major high-performance fibers together with carbon fiber and aramid fiber It has strong advantages in density, mechanical properties, impact resistance and wear resistance, as well as comprehensive properties such as chemical corrosion resistance, ultraviolet resistance, low temperature resistance and hydrophobicity.
-With a density of only 0.97 G/cm3, it can float on water and has outstanding advantages compared with other high-performance fibers.
- Under the same linear density, the tensile strength of UHMWPE fiber is 15 times that of wire rope, 40% higher than that of aramid fiber, which is one of the three high-performance fibers in the world, and 10 times higher than that of high-quality steel fiber and ordinary chemical fiber.
- UHMWPE fiber is superior to aramid fiber and carbon fiber in energy absorption and impact resistance during deformation and shaping, and its impact resistance is very outstanding.

UHMWPE Fiber History

In 1957, the United Chemical Company of the United States (one of the predecessors of the United Signal Company of the United States) first produced ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene.
In the 1970s, UHMWPE fibers were first successfully developed by the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom, and then DSM in the Netherlands invented the gel spinning method to prepare UHMWPE fibers, which were patented in 1979.
In 1985, AlliedSignal Corporation of the United States (merged with Honeywell Corporation of the United States in 1999 and continued to use the name of Honeywell Corporation) purchased patent rights from DSM of the Netherlands and improved the technology. In 1988, it realized commercial production and developed the super-high molecular weight polyethylene fiber with the trade name of" Spectra ® ".
In 1990, DSM in the Netherlands began producing UHMWPE fibers under the trade name "Dyneema ®" Subsequently, Toyobo of Japan, in cooperation with DSM of the Netherlands to produce "Dyneema ®" fibers, also successfully entered the UHMWPE fiber market.Before that, the production technology of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fiber has been monopolized by overseas enterprises.
In 1999, Donghua University, in conjunction with several companies and research institutes, invented a new process of mixed solvent gel spinning, which broke the technical blockade of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fibers.
Qianxilong Fiber is also one of the earliest enterprises to enter the ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fiber industry in China. It built a factory in 2010 and realized the industrial mass production of ultra-high molecular
